Lucky stone: A smooth beachstone with a stripe running through, generally a dark background color with a white stripe, but on occasion a lucky stone will occur as a rare stone of color.

Ellen was the first to explain the legend of a lucky stone. She said every home on her island had one. She said a lucky stone on a window sill brings good fortune to home, hearth, and all within. As we toured her island and visited other homes we found this to be true, lucky stones were indeed on window sills, fireplace mantles, and also used as doorstops, bookends, and paperweights. We found them in gardens, on the stairs leading to the front door, or sitting in little groups on the tops of bureaus in bedrooms.

The following summer, while visiting another island. I asked the proprietress of our bed and breakfast about the dish of small rocks with white stripes on a bathroom counter. She said, “Guests on day trips occasionally brought them back and left them in their rooms.” Over the years she had collected so many she made arrangements of them for each of her rooms. She said, “Did you know they are called lucky stones?” “I’ve always felt they bring good energy and their presence is a warm gesture from guests-past to guests-future.”

As we continued exploring the coast of Maine hunting for stones for our various bracelets, we found certain rare choice colors of lucky stones which we are now offering in a bracelet. Each bracelet is different according to the colors. Each is beautiful.
