Fishing For Crabs
At The Sea Shore
I was a summer kid at the shore. We had a dock, we had boats, we had a tidal river, we had cliffs and tidepools. Off our dock, we could catch crabs as fast as we could pull them in. Crabs were pure magic because they had a big shell in the middle that was stationary and ten legs that were constantly moving.
We kept a traditional fish bowl on the dock. We filled it with fresh seawater and plopped crabs in one right after the other. We could fill a fish tank fast because crabs were curious. Crabs were hungry, and crabs went wild for the hot dog in the yellow net. They would battle one another for the opportunity to be next. Kids loved fishing for crabs. It was the best, most rewarding fishing of any kind. It required no patience. We tossed the net and hauled them in. It was a great way to spoil the patience of a true fisherman years later. As kids, we had fun.
Fishing for Crabs
Diamond and Ruby Pin
This crab is a technological wonder. The diamonds were specially cut with tongue and grove edges that allow them to pavé the entire top of the shell. There are 38 quadrillion-cut diamonds (the name of the special cut). The crab’s back is dazzling. I used to sit at the dock and watch crabs scurry beneath the rising tide. They don’t walk straight forward; they walk sideways.
Our crab’s two front claws are double articulated. The two big claws also open and close. The next row down of skinny legs are singly articulated. The 41 big quad diamonds on the crab’s back weigh a whopping 2.40 carats. The 62 diamonds in the skinny legs weigh .45 carat. The crab is all 18K yellow gold. It has two ruby eyes. It is made as a pin and is designed for the crab pinned on a lapel to be looking up.
This Was a Crab-Catching Session
at our dock in September.
Four kids, a fish bowl, a yellow net, a hotdog, and a long heavy blue string. They were catching crabs as fast as they could pull them in.
Special note: You can pick up a crab safely with a thumb and index finger, grasping the left and right sides of the shell. Crabs are not doubly jointed, so you are safe. While carefully holding, turn the crab upside down. Rub the tummy of the crab gently with your index finger, and you can put the crab to sleep in less than a minute. What can you do with a sleeping crab? Nothing, really. You could line 6 of them up, douse them with seawater, and watch them race for the edge of the dock.
What would happen to all of the crabs in the fish bowl? Black in the 1950s and 60s, we were good stewards of nature and the environment. At the end of a fishing expedition, we would pour the fish bowl of crabs back into the sea. No one had to explain that to kids in the 1950s and kids in the new millennium also are equally good stewards of the environment.
How many do we have?
Just one. How many could we make? Zero. This is the last crab of its kind anywhere in the world. It’s really beautiful.
Here is our guarantee: your new crab pin, worn out on the town will gather more comments in an evening than 3 – 8-year-olds fishing for crabs can catch in an hour. You can easily claim 2 1/2 carats of diamonds or even round up to 3 carats. The kids on the dock will just have to grow up to have a real conversation with you about your new diamond pin.
