Window of Opportunity

Fifty years have passed since the major 1972 tourmaline find in Newry, Maine where they found 3.5 million carats of tourmaline crystals. Over the years we bought more than we sold knowing that gem finds don’t last forever. There are now colors, sizes, and shapes that are extremely rare and, in some cases, no longer available. If you see something you love it’s best to act quickly. There’s no guarantee another gem like this one exists.

Case in point: In 2007 there was a find of tourmaline in Newry, Maine called Eureka Blue. People loved the color. The gems sold quickly, but the find was small and the mining only lasted a few seasons. Within three years of the discovery, all the large Eureka gems had sold. We still get calls from people who are now ready to buy. What they want, however, simply no longer exists from that find in 2007.

Gem finds are rare, especially in North America. Maine tourmaline is a piece of Maine and American history, it’s a connection to a place we all love, an exquisite creation of nature. The center gem is a light spring green color. The color of the year’s first plants, the new leaves budding out in early May. I strongly suspect this gem tourmaline is from the 1972 gem find on Plumbago Mountain, 80 miles north of Portland. The discovery was over a half-century ago. We acquired a lot of gems then. It’s a bright spring green. At the time, they called the color apple green.

The green tourmaline is surrounded by 20 precision-cut blue sapphire baguettes, the deep royal blue of certain September seas. This shade of blue does not occur often. Over the years, I’ve seen this deep blue color perhaps a dozen times.

Part of what makes this green-blue color combination so fascinating is the drama of the dark blue set around the light green color. As you move the ring, you have the rich blue of the sapphire with small facets catching white light sparkling around the green. It’s magic. And that’s what caught my eye and attracted me to this particular piece.

The gems are set halo secure. In the “Y” type shank, there are 24 tiny white diamonds on either side of the center. They frame and support the spectacular color in the center. On the north and south sides of the ring, we have sloping lacework detail. That is a half-hidden delight. As the owner, you can always peek. The ring is all 18-karat white gold.
