Rare Combination
Pastel Blue and Spring Green
Maine Tourmaline Necklace

I asked Andy to pick out a piece for today’s email. He came back with this piece triple-wrapped in tiny jewelers’ clear plastic Ziplock bags. I took one look and thought, I need to be the one to do the selecting. I was disappointed in his choice. An hour later, I opened the zips and pulled the necklace out; I was astounded. It was breathtakingly beautiful.

Tourmaline comes in every color of the rainbow. In Maine, our primary color is green, our secondary is teal, and tied for third place is blue or pink. This is a medium-light lively spring green, antique cushion shape with a mixed cut pattern. It handles light very well. At the top of the tourmaline is a cap of four brilliant white diamonds…just a dusting like light snow…it’s lovely. Then, the little triangle at the very top is articulated, meaning it moves freely. The color of the little triangle gem is a pastel blue tourmaline…RARE.

When I took the necklace out of the Ziplock bags, my reaction was wow! It was so much more beautiful than my first impression. I then asked for a copy of the website photograph. One look and it became clear how much more beautiful the finished piece was than the plastic bag version, or the website picture, or the printed version. Actually, it’s supposed to be that way. The real thing should be better than photographs and layers of plastic hiding the real piece.

In short, this is a classic, a lovely classic, authentic piece of genuine Maine tourmaline jewelry. Whoever gets this is indeed the winner. This piece is prettier than its picture.

Why We Love This Piece

Color is pure magic. Color is like a chocolate bar for the eye. First, we have a minty green Maine tourmaline, mysterious, brilliant green. Then a little crescent of white diamonds to clear the pallet. Then above that, a triangle of pastel blue Maine tourmaline. The blue helps to define the green and the green certifies the blue. These gems are close cousins coming from a small geographical area in the western mountains of Maine.

While these two gems were forming, dinosaurs ruled the Earth miles above. This piece possesses a grand sweep of Earth’s history. The colors complement and play nicely with one another. How many do we have? Just one. How many can we make exactly like this? Zero. If you’re seeking a choice and rare piece of Maine tourmaline jewelry this necklace is it.

Maine Tourmaline, A Maine Story
An American Gem

First discovered in 1820 and in subsequent finds over the years, these early discoveries put Maine on the world map as a source for high-quality tourmaline gems. A major discovery in 1972 on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine established Maine as a significant world source of fine tourmaline gemstones.

Cross recognized the historical significance of this find and began working closely with the miners of these magnificent gems. The close partnership continues today with the ongoing discoveries in Maine’s western mountains.

100% Natural

We go to Maine’s gem mines. We know the miners. We know the gem cutters. We guarantee our tourmaline to be from Maine and is 100% natural. Cross maintains the largest collection of fine Maine tourmaline jewelry in the world.

Window of Opportunity

Fifty years have passed since the major 1972 tourmaline find in Newry, Maine where they found 3.5 million carats of tourmaline crystals. Over the years we bought more than we sold knowing that gem finds don’t last forever. There are now colors, sizes, and shapes that are extremely rare and, in some cases, no longer available. If you see something you love it’s best to act quickly. There’s no guarantee another gem like this one exists.

Case in point: In 2007 there was a find of tourmaline in Newry, Maine called Eureka Blue. People loved the color. The gems sold quickly, but the find was small and the mining only lasted a few seasons. Within three years of the discovery, all the large Eureka gems had sold. We still get calls from people who are now ready to buy. What they want, however, simply no longer exists from that find in 2007.

Gem finds are rare, especially in North America. Maine tourmaline is a piece of Maine and American history, it’s a connection to a place we all love, an exquisite creation of nature. Today, there is a rare opportunity to own a bit of Maine/American pride and heritage, and history in choosing a piece of Maine tourmaline.
