The gem was cut from a large, long tourmaline crystal, one end pink tourmaline, the other end green tourmaline. This gem was cut at the meeting of the two colors. Following the discovery in 1972, there were many big bi-color tourmaline cut. We acquired, mounted, and sold many.
This piece was the last of a series. Made for us in the 1970s by Wefferling Berry. The tourmaline weighs 18.86 carats. It measures 1″ left to right. It’s a big gem. It is emerald-cut and like all big Maine bi-color gems, it has a rich garden of inclusions drifting through the interior. Five high-white Royal Ideal-cut diamonds are in the bail. Mounting is 18K yellow gold. Chain is 18″, 14k yellow gold snake-style chain.
Where has this piece been all these years? Often, when we create a major series, the last piece in the series we will retire, put in our Archival Collection, waiting to revive it 20, 30, 40 years later. This is one of those historic pieces. The 50th anniversary of the 1972 find will be coming right up. We decided to release this piece early for the upcoming 50th anniversary in 2022. This is a rare and irreplaceable piece of gem mining history.
