Marco Polo
Was Looking For a Gem Sapphire
Just Like This 700 Years Ago

Marco Polo was a member of an Italian gem family He travelled overland to China in 1271. The trip took three years. Marco spent 20 years in China before returning west by ship. He stopped in Ceylon (now called Sri Lanka), known as the Island of Gems.

During Polo’s years in China, he saw a vast wealth of gems and continued to hear about the Island of Gems, Ceylon, a land so rich in gems that they were lying about on the riverbanks. Marco Polo wanted to see this wealth for himself. According to his notes, he returned to Italy by ship and stopped in Ceylon, which was indeed overflowing with gems.

Marco Polo: The World’s Greatest Explorer
Found the Island of Sapphires

It took the Polo family three years to travel over the Silk Road to reach China from Italy. Marco Polo was around 20 when they arrived. Marco spent the next 20 years in China. Coming from Western Europe, Marco had been told that the Chinese were a backward people. He was astonished to find that this was a myth. Marco was impressed with their civilization and cleanliness, among many other things. He was fascinated with paper money and porcelain and brought fireworks back to Europe.

The Polo’s were gem merchants. Marco’s time in Ceylon, provided him with additional gem treasures to bring back to Italy.

The Ring

The ring is a classic, with a 10.7 x 7.85 brilliant step-cut blue sapphire. The sapphire is big, at 4.36 carats. That’s a large sapphire and a lot of blue between two high white oval diamonds, weighing a total of .63 carat. All three gems are set in an all-handmade platinum setting. Finger size is 6 1/2 and can be sized down to a 5 1/2 and up to a 8 3/4.

We have two gem certificates for the center sapphire. Both were issued in Thailand. Curiously, they are 10 years apart. The first report says there are indications of heating, a standard and accepted practice for color enhancement in sapphires. The second gem lab report indicates the same and renders a professional judgment. that the country of origin is Sri Lanka. The color would suggest that’s true.

Two Gem Certificates Issued in Thailand

If you decide to adopt this ring, we will send you copies of both reports. You will also receive an insurance appraisal from Cross. We will send the original Thailand certificates 30 days after you receive the ring.

Ceylon / Sri Lanka
One of My Favorite Stories

Recently, they were building a new road through the jungle in Sri Lanka. Trucks were coming, dumping gravel, graders were smoothing it out, and things were progressing nicely until, at lunchtime, everything stopped. A truck driver had just left a pile of gravel. He had a cigarette break, looked down at the fresh gravel, and picked out a fine big blue crystal. He saw another, then another. The gravel he was delivering was scattered with blue sapphire gem crystals. Truck drivers, graders, and operators caught wind, and the new highway came to an abrupt halt. Guys were picking up fine gem crystals like blueberries.

Within a few hours, the Sri Lankan military moved in, cordoned off the area, and secured the gravel pit. Details of the story go dark after that. We do know that when gem finds occur, there can be a quantity of gems flooding the market briefly and everyone is surprised.

These Two are the Same Ring

The first picture is the ring handheld under a combination of fluorescent light and an incandescent light photographed with an iPhone on my desk.

The second picture shows the same ring photographed in our photo studio with professional cameras and what is considered proper lighting.

The two photographs show the reality of the same gem under different light conditions. Is the first or the second the correct answer? Both are, and everything in between. Gems appear radically different on cloudy or sunny days, under a tree or in full sun. The gem’s appearance changes from noon to midnight. It’s not wrong. It’s simply the reality of lighting.

We believe many gems look their best after the sun sets. They take on a magical sparkle in evening lighting.
