I am a 13th Century Monk
In a Monastery in the South of France

I am an illustrator, a copyist, working in the replication of earth’s greatest treasures, the bible. I work in gold leaf and lapis for living blue colors. Opening letters are drawn, then painted. My life and all that I remember has been at this monastery. Time is suspended, I draw and paint, I look out the window to the vineyards and the grapes. I look out the window to a southwestern sun and the light on the Mediterranean. My window is small. The panes are small, diamond in shape. I can see the hills I can see grape vines and the setting sun in the western sky. A color I seldom use is purple, light purple like lilacs in spring or red wine thinned by water.

I see things for which I have no words. I see things I think maybe of the future. I paint in my big book of gold and purple, opening to a new chapter. It is shape and design laid in against the page. I know where the diamond shapes come from, I sometimes see images of a future I do not know. I see events coming to pass 6 months and a year later but sometimes I think perhaps it may be 100 or 500 years. Impossible to know exactly when. But time bends and when it curves enough, thought and vision springs forward and I see.

This is what the 13th century monk saw, that he painted, illustrated – a light lilac shape and form set in gold, surrounded by brilliant tiny white stars. The paints were laid in the oils and dried. Sun went down then it was time to retire for supper.

This checkerboard amethyst pear-shape, small panes of glass leaded, set to let light in, and yet that’s what he saw and what he painted was a pear-shape lilac amethyst, a diluted color purple, surrounded by little stars. This is the necklace he saw seven hundred years ago.

Our extended ninety days, for a small business, is almost unheard of. Truth is, we shop for gifts too, and rather than scrambling at the last minute and feeling the tension of time, we like this more relaxed approach. We wish everyone did something like this… it would be a kinder, gentler world.
