A Thousand Years ago

Several things happened around the time the Vikings arrived in Greenland and the new world and Newfoundland. The Vikings were in transition at a thousand AD from the Old Norse Gods to Christianity. It happened quickly. Christianity and the cross came with the Vikings and literally to the new world.

So, while the original of this Christian cross was found in Viking-era Europe, we are imagining in our eastern Maine Lubec Lighthouse painting that the captain of the lead ship is wearing a Christian cross, quite like the one we’re showing today.

Yes, this is a chunky, bold cross. It has weight and heft in either silver or gold. We make it both ways. Can be worn by a man or woman, not too big, not too small. It’s a serious statement of faith.

I bought the original Cross at an International Antiquities auction. I loved its raw hand-hammered look. I had an opportunity to hold the cross before the auction. I was surprised at its heft and how solid it was. I could feel its seriousness of presence and its potential meaning to an individual from a thousand years ago. We made a master of the cross and have duplicated it in both silver and gold. We’ve been deeply impressed with how this cross looks and feels. People love it. This cross has become the most popular Christian cross in our 100-year history. The Vikings Were Here

The painter Charlie Swerdlow is a young guy, an ancient history buff, and a talented painter who goes back 200, 500, 1000, 2000 years to capture what was and what might have been. We’ve followed his progress for several years and asked if he’d be willing to do a series of Viking paintings for us that marked the Viking’s arrival in North America with a dash of the present woven into each painting.

This, obviously, is the lighthouse in Lubec at the easternmost point of the United States. Charlie has done a brilliant job capturing this improbable moment in time. Was a scene like this possible, minus the lighthouse? Yes. The Viking settlement at L’Anse aux Meadows, Newfoundland was less than a two-week sail from this location.

The lighthouses in our Viking series are painted as they currently stand to mark certain key points of possible contact along the Maine coast.

Time Travel

I love talking with Charlie. It feels like he is a portal to an ancient world…our ancestor’s world. He sees these ancient times with a luminosity that is rare and I can tell beyond merely painting a scene, he really deeply, profoundly feels it. Again, he is a portal to an ancient world. The cross was found in Europe; estimated to be from the Viking era. It’s a solid, serious, sacred item and would be a great addition to anyone’s collection.
