Pink Maine Tourmaline & Diamond Ring Set in the Highgate Design

I’m English. One quarter Scotch, one quarter German, so the English ancestry dominates, but then who really knows and who cares. If I relax and let the voices of my ancestors whisper their secrets to me, the winds blowing through the towers of Windsor Castle begin transmitting pictures.

In our store this design is known as Highgate. The early jewelry design inspiration was 1910’s, 1920’s, 1930’s. Rings like Highgate were made back then and all the design elements echo this period of jewelry history. All these designs elements can be found in the Victorian furniture, wrought iron gates, and a thousand other earlier 19th century creations.

Now let’s skip ahead 70 years to two brothers in New York City, year 2000. They are masters of traditional jewelry design who have conquered some of the most recent 21st century jewelry design technology. What we realize is these guys are capable of Edwardian and Art Deco style jewelry creation. Many who use this 21st century are just kids with some art school classes behind them. These art school kids, they call themselves designers. What they end up creating are B-grade designs. The brothers, however, who created Highgate are valedictorians of their class in jewelry design.

I was studying the intricacy of this ring at 4:30 one June afternoon, watching the light pass through the gem casting a pink glow against the gold. Now while you may never spend time studying your new ring like this, someone three generations later in the year 2120 may do exactly that. There are so many surfaces richly detailed, studded with diamonds. So many angles with engraving and beaded tracery. This ring holds decades of fascination and delight.

The gem: pink tourmaline found in Maine’s western mountains on Plumbago mountain in 1972. This is a rare archival pink gem. One of the last pinks of this size from this historic tourmaline discovery in Maine.
