There are five stories to this ring:
1) First, the gem is a world-class discovery by Jeff Morrison at an old gem mine that he had purchased. Long story short, in 2006, Jeff opened a gem pocket that was the beginning of one of the world’s greatest tourmaline finds. The new color was called SparHawk mint green teal, a highly consistent color of medium green from this highly mineralized new tourmaline find.
2) Sean Sweeney is one of the best gem cutters in the world today. He lives here in Maine. Sean found Jeff and arranged for a meeting. He has been cutting the SparHawk tourmaline since the beginning of the find and cut this gem.
3) This style of cut is called the twilight cut and appears almost like dozens of digitalized cubes of light racing up and down the length of the gem. The gem cut is both simple and complex. It is simple in that across the top are seven or nine horizontal facets, across the back are eight or ten vertical facets. They slice and dice light into little square packets that look like digitalized light creating a twinkling effect that dazzles the observer.
4) Sophisticated cutting in this twilight cut gem creates complex arcs and curves, there are no pre-done mountings for these new styles of cut, which means that gems must have their settings hand-made to fit each gem.
5) The shank, the part of the ring that goes around the finger, is pink and green gold. The design pattern is pink gold roses with green gold leaves. It was originally made in the 1940s. Our partner who makes this shank for us makes the ring in all pink gold with six pink roses, then sets the four green gold leaves between the roses. It starts off wider at the top then narrows toward the back. The center head and roses are all done in pink gold.
I’ve always dreamed of a gem find like this. To have this mine be so close to home, just 28 miles north of our store in the mountains of western Maine, is amazing. Gems so fine, so pure, with colors so vivid. It’s important someone documents this historic gem find here in Maine, because it’s a history-making discovery in the world of gems.
The video above is 1:43. It gives you a good idea of the excitement we feel for the gems we are discovering here in Maine.
Maine has been world-famous for the tourmaline gems mined here for over 200 years. The geology in our western mountains has yielded a treasure trove of world class gems. Cross Jewelers has been the Maine state leader, bringing fine Maine tourmaline jewelry to all of America for over 100 years.
We have over 200 pieces of Maine tourmaline jewelry from both the SparHawk mine and other Maine mines.

Our extended ninety days, for a small business, is almost unheard of. Truth is, we shop for gifts too, and rather than scrambling at the last minute and feeling the tension of time, we like this more relaxed approach. We wish everyone did something like this… it would be a kinder, gentler world.
