I find it interesting that Shakespeare, the world greatest writer, the world’s greatest playwright, was alive only 400 years ago, and yet, the man, Shakespeare, is still a mystery. We know where he lived and worked. I even have a charcoal rubbing from Anne, his wife’s gravestone in a frame in my writing room. (I’ll bet a rubbing can’t be done today). Modern society is mystified by this man who amazingly appeared on the stage of humanity and wrote so brilliantly. Shakespeare saw so deeply into the human heart and soul that we are still in awe 400 years later.
Back in the 1800s, there was a handmade jewelry head created to hold a center stone called a skeleton head. Each of the heads were made by a master jeweler from a single block of gold by drilling, filing, and polishing. We had our master jeweler make one for Cross. We cast and reproduced it.
The head looks a bit like a ruff collar worn by the elites of society back in Shakespeare’s day. Yes, this, is a bit of a leap. If you look closely at the side of the head you will see our jeweler has created six triangular air lines beneath the six prong head, four of them are partially covered by the full tapering shank.
The ring is all white platinum a metal which didn’t exist in Shakespeare’s time. Platinum was only introduced to jewelry in the 1890s, when we achieved controlled temperatures hot enough to melt the metal. The gem is Maine tourmaline from Mt. Mica where tourmaline was first discovered in 1820. The gem weighs .99 carats and is a light forest green. And, yes, this is both a superb and rare combination of gem and mounting.

A major discovery in 1972 on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine established Maine as a significant world source of fine tourmaline gemstones.
Cross recognized the historical significance of this find and began working closely with the miners of these magnificent gems. The close partnership continues today with the ongoing discoveries in Maine’s western mountains.

Fifty years have passed since the major 1972 tourmaline find in Newry, Maine where they found 3.5 million carats of tourmaline crystals. Over the years we bought more than we sold knowing that gem finds don’t last forever. There are now colors, sizes, and shapes that are extremely rare and, in some cases, no longer available. If you see something you love it’s best to act quickly. There’s no guarantee another gem like this one exists.
Case in point: In 2007 there was a find of tourmaline in Newry, Maine called Eureka Blue. People loved the color. The gems sold quickly, but the find was small and the mining only lasted a few seasons. Within three years of the discovery, all the large Eureka gems had sold. We still get calls from people who are now ready to buy. What they want, however, simply no longer exists from that find in 2007.
Gem finds are rare, especially in North America. Maine tourmaline is a piece of Maine and American history, it’s a connection to a place we all love, an exquisite creation of nature.
