We are an 18” jewelry store. Many years ago 16” was the standard length, in the 1950s and 1960s. Jacqueline Kennedy and all the movie stars wore 16” necklaces and a shorter version, a 15” collar necklace – it framed for dramatic appeal. Then suddenly 18” became the new standard that happened in the 1970s and has been the rule for nearly 50 years. The 18” length allowed any pendant hanging properly to be within inches of the heart.

So, this necklace for Cross is a wild departure at 32 inches. It is long, lean, loose with 18 tanzanite, a newly discovered gem from East Africa from one of the mines within a 5×1 mile block of land 37 miles from Mt. Kilimanjaro – Africa’s tallest mountain. The color of this new gem is blue-violet and found in only this one place in the world.

The length is worn two ways: outside a light-colored blouse of satin or outside a light-colored cashmere sweater for all to see and comment on. Or, it can be worn inside, it drops past the heart and stops just above the navel, hidden from view – it belongs to you and Africa.
