Maine’s Night Sky
Spruce Forest Green Maine Tourmaline
& Diamond Ring

Down here in Portland, we’re more a part of Boston and the east coast than we are real Maine. Portland is our big city in Maine. We’ve been trying hard for years to get up to 75,000 residents, which, in other parts of the country is barely bigger than a town. Our real population is 66,000.

Watercolor painting of stars in a night sky far from the lights of the city

Above Portland and east beyond Portland things thin out rapidly. Stop lights disappear, even stop signs become scarce. Get far enough north and east of Portland and our naturally dark skies are the best east of the Mississippi River. It’s there the night skies and stars glow brighter. Twice I’ve slept under star filled skies in Western Maine. A dozen times I’ve found myself far east of Portland and been left in jaw dropping awe of the night sky.

Maine’s Night Sky
Spruce Forest Green Maine Tourmaline
& Diamond Ring

Maine Tourmaline is rare. We’re now dipping into gem inventory acquired a long time ago. Andy, our shop foreman, found these three identical Spruce Forest green Maine tourmalines in our archive of gems. In our brick-and-mortar days, we would have made three different rings. In our new gallery world where we send out emails Monday – Friday, we often chose to put all three gems into one design. Maine’s Night Sky was our choice for these three superb gems.

This is an angelic design in white gold, sprinkled with diamonds and a halo in the center of yellow gold. The cutter of these these three Maine tourmaline gems did an awesome job. They are bright, brilliant, so sparkly you can almost smell the evergreen scent of the Spruce trees.

We have three rings. Three rings may sound like a lot. Certainly, if we made three rings our customers might think we have a box full of gems just like these first three…yes, we wish. This is it, this is it, this is it! And, too often in Maine’s gems, once something is sold, it’s often gone forever.

We would love to have a hundred gems just like these. We would be delighted with even three more. Alas, the three we have in this size, this color, this cut are most likely it. These three Maine’s Night Sky rings are rare because they are exceptional gems. Will we make this ring again? Probably, but these three gems are truly amazing and this ring with this quality gem is unlikely to be duplicated ever again.

Maine Tourmaline, A Maine Story
An American Gem

First discovered in 1820 and in subsequent finds over the years, these early discoveries put Maine on the world map as a source for high-quality tourmaline gems. A major discovery in 1972 on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine established Maine as a significant world source of fine tourmaline gemstones.

Cross recognized the historical significance of this find and began working closely with the miners of these magnificent gems. The close partnership continues today with the ongoing discoveries in Maine’s western mountains.

100% Natural

We go to Maine’s gem mines. We know the miners. We know the gem cutters. We guarantee our tourmaline to be from Maine and is 100% natural. Cross maintains the largest collection of fine Maine tourmaline jewelry in the world.

Window of Opportunity

Fifty years have passed since the major 1972 tourmaline find in Newry, Maine where they found 3.5 million carats of tourmaline crystals. Over the years we bought more than we sold knowing that gem finds don’t last forever. There are now colors, sizes, and shapes that are extremely rare and, in some cases, no longer available. If you see something you love it’s best to act quickly. There’s no guarantee another gem like this one exists.

Case in point: In 2007 there was a find of tourmaline in Newry, Maine called Eureka Blue. People loved the color. The gems sold quickly, but the find was small and the mining only lasted a few seasons. Within three years of the discovery, all the large Eureka gems had sold. We still get calls from people who are now ready to buy. What they want, however, simply no longer exists from that find in 2007.

Gem finds are rare, especially in North America. Maine tourmaline is a piece of Maine and American history, it’s a connection to a place we all love, an exquisite creation of nature. Today, there is a rare opportunity to own a bit of Maine/American pride and heritage, and history in choosing a piece of Maine tourmaline jewelry.
