Over a half-century ago, Maine gem miners opened one of the World’s greatest treasure troves of colored gems in Maine’s western mountains. The quantity and quality were awe-inspiring. During the first 25 years, we acquired an astounding collection of choice Maine tourmaline in pink, teal, and green. In the next 25 years, the quantity thinned. In the last 10 years, we consider ourselves fortunate to have the opportunity to acquire just a few choice gems from this historic gem find each year.
It is pink Maine tourmaline we are most excited to acquire. Pink Maine tourmaline is rare. After the big find in ’72, there has been no gem finds of pink tourmaline that could yield any more than a half dozen pink Maine tourmaline.
We were excited this spring to acquire this pink Maine tourmaline. Its color is superb. Its size is rare. Even in the big years of acquisition, an oval in this size was few and far between. Do we expect to get lucky and acquire another just like it? Not likely because a pink like this is simply so rare. And yet, we keep the possibility open.
We thought about exquisite designs and chose one of our favorites, the Will & Kate ring… The engagement ring was inspired by the British Royal couple’s ring: oval colored gem center, surrounded by 14 high white, perfectly matched natural Earth-mined diamonds. Fourteen diamonds are the perfect size and number to surround a colored center gem. The ring was handmade in 14K yellow and white gold. Designed to sit low to the finger and super comfortable to wear.
Imagine you are newly engaged. You’ve just received a ring set with a big beautiful gem. Everyone will notice. They can’t help but notice. The world is watching. You are to become a princess and someday you will be Queen.
Following Will and Kate’s engagement in 2010 we studied the ring Prince William gave to Kate Middleton, taking detailed measurements from dozens of photographs. You have to assume the Royal Jeweler chosen by the House of Windsor knows a thing or two about jewelry design. Their jewelers understand balance and harmony while creating important and often large impressive pieces.
The most obvious point of note from our analysis of this royal ring are the fourteen diamonds which surround the center gem. Fourteen is the perfect number to frame, present and display, without taking away or upstaging the purity of color in the center. Jewelers to the royal family understand there is a special magic to the principle of fourteen, especially when the whole world is watching.
Here we have a superb 2.10 carat pink Maine tourmaline surrounded with fourteen brilliant white diamonds. This is an exquisite piece of jewelry sure to become a treasured family heirloom.
Maine Tourmaline, A Maine Story
An American Gem
First discovered in 1820 and in subsequent finds over the years, these early discoveries put Maine on the world map as a source for high-quality tourmaline gems. A major discovery in 1972 on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine established Maine as a significant world source of fine tourmaline gemstones.
Cross recognized the historical significance of this find and began working closely with the miners of these magnificent gems. The close partnership continues today with the ongoing discoveries in Maine’s western mountains.
100% Natural
We go to Maine’s gem mines. We know the miners. We know the gem cutters. We guarantee our tourmaline to be from Maine and is 100% natural. Cross maintains the largest collection of fine Maine tourmaline jewelry in the world.
Window of Opportunity
Fifty years have passed since the major 1972 tourmaline find in Newry, Maine where they found 3.5 million carats of tourmaline crystals. Over the years we bought more than we sold knowing that gem finds don’t last forever. There are now colors, sizes, and shapes that are extremely rare and, in some cases, no longer available. If you see something you love it’s best to act quickly. There’s no guarantee another gem like this one exists.
Case in point: In 2007 there was a find of tourmaline in Newry, Maine called Eureka Blue. People loved the color. The gems sold quickly, but the find was small and the mining only lasted a few seasons. Within three years of the discovery, all the large Eureka gems had sold. We still get calls from people who are now ready to buy. What they want, however, simply no longer exists from that find in 2007.
Gem finds are rare, especially in North America. Maine tourmaline is a piece of Maine and American history, it’s a connection to a place we all love, an exquisite creation of nature. Today, there is a rare opportunity to own a bit of Maine/American pride and heritage, and history in choosing a piece of Maine tourmaline jewelry.

Our extended ninety days, for a small business, is almost unheard of. Truth is, we shop for gifts too, and rather than scrambling at the last minute and feeling the tension of time, we like this more relaxed approach. We wish everyone did something like this… it would be a kinder, gentler world.
