The man who was originally responsible for making this ring design owned five jewelry companies based in New York and New Jersey. He bought an island off the coast of Maine (or 95% of it). The island had a harbor, and lobstermen with offshore bait and equipment shops lining one side of the harbor. There were also a few summer residents. The out-of-state jeweler visited his island occasionally. He had a grass field airport. It saved him time and the vagaries of the ocean boat rides.
Was he thinking of his island and the ocean when he designed this ring? Possibly! Do I think about his island and this ring? Absolutely. The island is long and narrow in the middle. I spent a three-day weekend on this island with a lobsterman and his wife. You might imagine that with one rich guy and working-class neighbors, there could be conflict. My understanding was that everyone seemed to get along just fine, and they all loved the rich guy.
One of the days I was there, I hiked the outer perimeter of the island and saw his gray shingled house and his private cove. It was nice. The island is remote. It’s the furthest out inhabitable island on the Coast of Maine. The 95% owner had a man stay in his house all winter long to watch over the island.
At various points over the last 50 years, we have done business with three of the man’s five companies. The companies were good; they had great designs. I would say the 95% island owner was brilliant. One of my favorite rings was this ring called Private Island. While I was on the island, we took a ride in my friend’s lobster boat around the island and out to sea. There are places on the Maine coast that are pure magic.
Why a Cross Sapphire is the Best
We love blue. We know blue. We live by the blue sea, beneath summer blue skies. Our business is located on a peninsula called Portland, surrounded by saltwater on three sides. We can feel the blue ocean pulsing with every tide. From the rooftop of our building, we can see the open sea. Binoculars show ships coming and going on a blue, blue sea.
We love blue sapphire: It is bright, brilliant and is amazingly durable. As the second hardest gem to diamond, it is a highly wearable gem, ideal for rings. We love blue sapphire… we love it so much that we have traveled to southeast Asia to find first-choice colors. We choose a lighter, brighter blue than most American jewelers because it shows up best under a wide range of real-world lighting conditions. Our blue sapphires look and perform best on everything from sunny days to a candlelit dinner for two.
We want your blue sapphire to dazzle you, dazzle your partner and everyone in any room you visit. Cross’ blue sapphires are the best.
