I’m going to reveal something about me as a native Mainer who has lived on the coast for 70 years. “I love fog”. Not many will admit this as a secret passion. I do, though. Fog rolls in, fog sweeps in, fog can build slowly. Fog can suddenly be present over the land. I’ve seen a fog bank sweep 20-30 miles per hour across the horizon and simply come ashore in minutes. Fog is beautiful. Fog is dangerous. A landscape dressed in fog is magical. Trees can be vivid up close and fade 100 feet away, then simply disappear at 200 feet. Fog creates fascinating landscapes for photography that clear, sun-filled skies simply can’t. Fog obscures so much and yet it helps us to focus on what’s near.
At my last house we had a summer of fog. It seemed that summer the fog simply settled along the coast and covered the land. Trees gathered the moisture, leaves dripped. The fog horns blew constantly. Then when I traveled 400, 500, 600 feet inland, the sun was shining and it was 10 degrees warmer. People may call me crazy. I loved my “summer of fog”. We even ran the furnace every couple of days to dry the interior of the house.
