He was seven the day we went, my son and I, far out into the Gulf of Maine to watch the whales. At first we saw spouts. The boat shut down and we waited quietly. A mother and her calf approached, dove beneath the boat and re-appeared on the other side, diving and re-appearing. We ran from side to side to watch them play. They were so close it seemed you could almost reach out and touch them. It was unbelievable, majestic, amazing. They seemed as curious about us as we were of them.
At the end the captain said in a reverent whisper, “Folks, it doesn’t get any better than this.”
