If Bluebirds Lay Powder Blue Eggs
Do Cardinals Lay Pink Eggs?
Not a chance, but even more interesting, 95% of all bluebird eggs are powder blue, 5% are white, and every once in a great while a bluebird lays pastel pink eggs.
Who knew?
Our Bluebirds Sing collection is set with light blue Ceylon sapphires. Today the country is called Sri Lanka. In the jewelry business, we still refer to light blue sapphires as Ceylon Blue sapphires.

The Island of Ceylon
And its Famed Pastel
Blue Sapphires
Marco Polo spent 24 years in China, working for a portion of time for the great Kublai Khan. Marco Polo saw firsthand the gems possessed by China in 1271 – 1295 and listened to rumors of an island called Ceylon to the south, an island that was thick with gems. The island was rumored to have so many gems that they were simply lying on the river banks. Marco Polo left China to return to Italy in 1295 and stopped on his way by Ceylon to see personally the gem wealth of the island nation. Back in Italy, he raved about what he saw.
Ceylon was, and still is famous for sapphires of a powder blue color, like the color of bluebird eggs.

Bluebirds are pretty much a North American phenomena. Bluebirds in Sweden, Ireland or Italy…not a chance. These guys prefer this side of the pond.
