I live next to the sea. Yes, it’s magic. Yes, it’s blue. As we were looking at this necklace, Alice said, “This necklace is a drop of water you could go down to the shore and scoop up…”
I interrupted and said, “Yeah, I could bring a measuring cup down. The truth settles in; of course, a measuring cup of water is colorless, and yet, a billion, billion, billion raindrops all together become an ocean and are blue, and the symbol of a raindrop is a pear shape.
Nice blue pear shape sapphires are rare. I sat with a gem cutter yesterday. He had 150 blue sapphires. One sapphire in his collection, just one, was a pear shape. It was beautiful. I bought it.
This story begins to explain how rare a lovely blue sapphire in a pear shape can be. In this classic design, we have three necklaces. Three sounds like a lot..it is! In my 45 years here at Cross, we’ve never had three pear shape blue sapphires at one time. And, when we’ve had one, we’ve often mounted it as a classic like this necklace. We have only three of these necklaces today. The blue is beautiful, brilliant, and with a small pure white diamond at the top, it indeed captures the color of our Maine ocean. The necklace is pure magic.

This photograph gives you a good sense of the size of the Maine Coast Blue Sapphire Raindrop necklace. The top of the loop to the bottom of the sapphire is 14mm or a little over 1/2 inch.
Why We Love This Necklace
It’s a classic with a beautiful blue gem. Simple, not fussy, it’s a big, rare, pear-shaped blue sapphire, and a brilliant white diamond flashing bright, all set in 14K yellow gold.
Why a Cross Sapphire is the Best
We love blue. We know blue. We live by the blue sea, beneath summer blue skies. Our business is located on a peninsula called Portland, surrounded by saltwater on three sides. We can feel the blue ocean pulsing with every tide. From the rooftop of our building, we can see the open sea. Binoculars show ships coming and going on a blue, blue sea.
We love blue sapphire: It is bright, brilliant and is amazingly durable. As the second hardest gem to diamond, it is a highly wearable gem, ideal for rings. We love blue sapphire…we love it so much that we have traveled to southeast Asia to find first-choice colors. We choose a lighter, brighter blue than most American jewelers because it shows up best under a wide range of real-world lighting conditions. Our blue sapphires look and perform best on everything from sunny days to a candlelit dinner for two.
We want your blue sapphire to dazzle you, dazzle your partner and everyone in any room you visit. Cross’ blue sapphires are the best.
