Why do we call this ring “Buzzards Bay”? It is a rather inelegant name. If you live on Buzzards Bay’s shores in Massachusetts, you probably know that Europeans, when they first arrived, mistook ospreys for buzzards and named the body of water Buzzards Bay, and the name stuck. In the 21st century, there’s not a buzzard to be found, but osprey are everywhere.
The average depth of the bay is 36 feet, which means ten thousand years ago, when the last Ice Age retreated, the ocean was 50 feet lower, and the bay was forest and field. Today, with rising seas, the bottom is sandy, and sharks and fish swim in the shallows. Buzzards Bay has some of the best sailing in the world.
The bay is large, covering over 200 square miles of ocean. The ring sits low, close to the finger, kind of like the depth of the bay. The blue sapphire is a beautiful shade of blue, like the bay. The gem is round and weighs .94 carats. There are ten graduated diamonds weighing .25 carats total. The ring is handmade in all 14K yellow gold.
