My Fern Forest

I have a fern forest at the lowest point in my yard. I have a dozen varieties that grow there. There are tiny ferns a few inches high to ferns four and five feet high and feathering out as far. I have a stream that runs through this property and a place to sit and listen to the birds and an occasional plop as a frog jumps into the stream. I have two lace iron chairs and a lace iron table all painted flat black. I go down to walk among the ferns and sit to contemplate the nature of existence.

In April, I can see the sea 200 feet away from fernland. In July, the ferns and cattails grow tall enough that I am left in my fern forest watching Redwing blackbirds balance on cattail leaves. One of my excuses for going down to this area is to check on the flow of the stream and listen to it spill over the several small waterfalls.

Cross’ Fiddlehead Ring

My great-grandfather, William Cross. made the original Fiddlehead ring in 1918 for his daughter’s 16th birthday. I inherited the original ring and gave it to my eldest daughter on her 16th birthday. In early spring, ferns begin to grow. For most ferns, what emerges first is called a fiddlehead. It’s the fern in an early curl. Ferns and fiddleheads are beautiful and one of nature’s miracles of shape and design.

The fern and fiddlehead pattern is beautiful. We have applied the fern’s shapes to a series of rings set with blue sapphires, green Maine tourmalines, and diamonds. One of the interesting things about this ring is that while the pattern looks good the first year you have it, every year that goes by, it keeps getting better because ordinary wear softens the look of the design.

The blue sapphire is set halo style. It is securely held in place by a full surround of gold. The ring’s surface is smooth and sits low for ease of wear. A ring with an engraved pattern catches the eye on your first day of ownership and every day for the next 50 years. Others will notice your ring, too. The Fiddlehead ring quickly becomes a favorite because everyone is drawn to it.

Our Fiddlehead ring is shown in detailed engraving of shadow and light with a blue sapphire center. This is an absolutely gorgeous low-profile, practical, wearable, durable ring… a ring to wear and love for a lifetime. Today we have two Sapphire Fiddlehead rings ready to ship.

The Fiddlehead Ring was passed down through generations of the Cross family and a was most recently given to William’s great-great-granddaughter. Because there were two great-great-granddaughters, we made another. It came out so beautifully we made a few more. And as they say, “The rest is history.” Choose this ring, share in its history and you too become part of the family.

Why a Cross Sapphire is the Best

We love blue. We know blue. We live by the blue sea, beneath summer blue skies. Our business is located on a peninsula called Portland, surrounded by saltwater on three sides. We can feel the blue ocean pulsing with every tide. From the rooftop of our building, we can see the open sea. Binoculars show ships coming and going on a blue, blue sea.

We love blue sapphire: It is bright, brilliant and is amazingly durable. As the second hardest gem to diamond, it is a highly wearable gem, ideal for rings. We love blue sapphire… we love it so much that we have traveled to southeast Asia to find first-choice colors. We choose a lighter, brighter blue than most American jewelers because it shows up best under a wide range of real-world lighting conditions. Our blue sapphires look and perform best on everything from sunny days to a candlelit dinner for two.

We want your blue sapphire to dazzle you, dazzle your partner and everyone in any room you visit. Cross’ blue sapphires are the best.
