Fields of Lupine
Every year in June, my family makes our first trip north to our summer house in mid-coast Maine. We come up knowing that it will be a weekend of uncovering furniture, making beds, and airing out after the long, cold winter. It will be a fun weekend of seeing friends and finding the treasures we left behind, but there will also be work to be done.
The road north is filled with beloved landmarks that we anticipate at each bend. As you head up the Maine coast, there is one main route, and we’ve driven it hundreds of times. We are always elated as we cross the border from New Hampshire into Maine. We smile as we pass the same houses, the same rivers, the same little businesses that we see every year.
And then we see the Lupine. We remember the Lupine! Along the sides of the highway and then up Route 1, there are fields aglow with the soft, purply-blue haze of tall Lupine. Like the landmarks we know by heart, the lupine feels like a part of our Maine; something we know so well and love dearly.
Blue – Purple Color

Lupine is an invasive plant that has won over the hearts of the people who love Maine. The soft colors of its flowers turn what can be a harsh environment into a soft, pastel beauty.
