I Once Knew a Gypsy
She was young. Her eyes flashed chestnut brown. Her hair was long and dark, with a dash of curl. She was quick to laugh, moved fast, spoke with a type of certainty that made men uneasy. She knew things no one could or should know, not because she had been told, simply because she knew. I viewed her with awe.
She claimed to have Gypsy blood. On more than one occasion she said she had bought a van, then talked about driving it through the summer and into the fall. Before winter set in, she and a few friends would circle the wagons (vans), build a huge bonfire up on a mountainside in western Maine and feast and party into the night. She would sell the van the next week. Knowing her, I’d be willing to bet she made a profit on every van. I was never invited to any of her end of season fests. I always believed it was because I didn’t have a van.
What She Wore
