Ice Follies Aquamarine & Diamond Necklace

Yes we will mix several things together. We’ll start at Rockefeller Center at the ice-skating rink, longer than it is wide. Water piped in from Upstate New York frozen to blue aqua smoothed for brilliance in the sun. Skates for rent, tables for two at the end. He’s good, she’s better. A curve, a curl, frosty snow carved figure eight in the surface, music playing in the background. And yes, Ice Follies left New York City and toured America showing millions what was possible on ice.

I was eight, an awkward, gawky age. One winter day we went to Capisic pond in Portland. There were 100 competent ice skaters on the pond. The pond was frozen, appropriately cleared and everyone seemed skilled on skates, except me. Even my dad and mom looked like Olympian champions and skated with ease.

My memory was wobbly… having a hard time even standing. I spent more time laying on the ice than even standing with a semblance of stability. I remember making it to one of the bales of hay and sitting and watching. Skating seems to come naturally to so many. It didn’t to me. I still marvel at anyone who can skate. There are many who mastered the art. This is an expanse of blue-white ice. Its real aquamarine surrounded with a halo of white diamonds.
