I grew up summers on the sea. We had a cottage, a dock, boats, sailboats, and a big motorboat. We rented out row boats for three summers. Here is a photograph from the summer of 1965. She wasn’t wearing the ring or bracelet; we painted them on. I can tell you, though, that being in the boat rental business for July and August was a great gig. Yes, there were challenges, like the guys who had never been fishing and rented, who went out and caught a boatload of sharks. Give someone the boat, oars, and life jacket, put their name on the list with a start time, and then see the look on their face an hour or two or three later as they pull into the dock, handing you a line; it’s priceless. Fishing or not, it was a grand adventure every time.
