Maine Tourmaline Necklace

Seven years ago, we planted two apple trees and a cherry tree. We dug the holes, backfilled with good loam, fertilized, and set out trees, apples on the outside, the cherry tree in the middle. All three trees started out the same height. Now, seven years later, the apple trees are eleven feet, four feet taller than when we planted them. The cherry tree is now twenty-five feet tall, and thick, bushy, with a thousand pink blossoms every spring. We’ve been surprised by these tree’s response to growth. We’re ready, though, to trust the wisdom of nature, that nature knows what it’s doing and why.

In Maine tourmaline, nature created ten times more green than pink. In the 1972 mega-discovery of tourmaline on Plumbago Mountain in western Maine, they hit the mother load of pink tourmaline. We bought a lot. It’s now a half-century later. This may seem impossible, but we still have awesome pink gems from the 1972 find.

How Do We Have This Gem?

If you had asked me two months ago if we had an 8x6mm pink tourmaline oval from the 1972 find, I would have said, “Of course not. We used them up decades ago.” And yet, we recently discovered this pink gem. We set it simply. We did not gussy it up with diamonds, we just set the pink gem.
