Hold in the mind’s eye the last polo match you attended. Yes, I thought so, neither have I – I’ve seen pictures though. Wild, fast, quick, exposed – the horses, the mallets, the helmets and of course the team colors. The polo shirt, horizontal stripes: light, dark, light, dark. See the shirt and you can hear horses galloping, you can see turf flying, you can see the polo mallets swinging and a ball flying. Yes, polo shirts can be plain solid colors. I had three in the 1960s with horizontal stripes. These are our Polo Match earrings – available in small, medium, or large, featuring blue sapphires alternating with diamonds. My Polo Field
In my neighborhood 28 neighbors share in the ownership of common lands. We collectively own the cliffs, coves, and beaches along out ¼ mile of ocean. We also own swamp and marsh lands, and two streams. In our 100+ year history we have debated the common use of our marsh lands. A couple of years ago several of our newest settlers got together to clear the invasives from one of the streams and damp areas. They worked for two years, finally bringing in fill, leveling the land, then planting grass. When the grass greened up, this new broad expansive area of sun light I named “the polo field”. It’s an old neighborhood, going back to the 1890s. Many of the houses still have horse barns, one double-stall barn fronts the new “polo field”. They built 3 bridges to ford the stream next to the polo field – to access pathways, and a picnic table among the ferns on higher ground. I was a bit disappointed when in the third year they started planting Garden Center plants and trees. Yes, it’s going to interfere with the polo ponies.
A Day of Polo
In preparing for this email, I discovered that one of the women who works here had gone to a Polo match a few years ago at The International Polo Club in Wellington, Florida. She told me it was all you imagine…fast, exciting, with beautiful horses and good looking Polo players. She had been invited by friends who are regulars, and watched side-line in a private tent eating delicious food and sipping champagne being served from the back of a Rolls Royce. “We felt so lucky to be able to watch this beautiful game in this beautiful location. Our only regret was that Nacho Figueras had been playing the week before…now that would have been something!” …and yes, she did stomp divots.
