The indomitable spirit of these fierce, independent little avian mariners is to be admired. They come to their own private islands to recreate and nest in the late spring and summer.
When baby puffins are ready, the big and little puffins go back to the sea, far, far out. No one is exactly sure where they will spend the fall and winter, floating, flying, diving, fishing, and braving fierce winter winds and wild seas.
Here, we show the puffin buffeted by wind and waves in its seven-month return to the sea. Sterling silver puffin carved from Ancient Fossilized Mammoth Tusk, gold-plated bill detail, faceted moonstone at the top of the wave. Comes with a sterling silver 18″ medium tiff chain.

I Saw Puffins
For the First Time
I once spent ten days in Ireland. I went with a group of Americans on a trip sponsored by the Institute for Noetic Science. We went by boat out to the Aran Islands. It was cold, windy, raining, with rough seas. I had packed a serious canvas coat with a green corduroy collar. It kept me warm. Because the boat was crowded on the passage over, I stood outside at the back of the boat with five other guys.
What we saw were dozens of Puffins shooting by. I’ve heard Puffins described as looking like little flying footballs, and that was exactly what they looked like. When we landed, I was drenched, but I will have this enduring memory of these compact little sea birds flying low and fast across the tops of waves.
On the trip back two days later, the sun was shining, and the sea was calm. We saw no Puffins. They’re tough little birds. It seemed, on that windy day, they were out for sport.
New England Puffins
I’ve seen puffins in Maine. We went with a lobsterman from Criehaven Island out to Matinicus Rock and its lighthouse. There is a significant colony of puffins on this island…hundreds.
Puffins are cute. They look like little penguins, walk funny, fly fast with short wings, and have large, colorful parrot-like beaks. Puffins choose remote, off-shore islands for the protection of their young. Foxes, raccoons, and skunks could wipe out a colony in short order, making remote islands ideal nesting spots.
Why You Should Consider a Puffin
They are cute. They are rare. They are a protected species, and then, remarkably, we have carved their body from ancient 15,000-year-old fossilized mammoth tusk, also very rare. These pieces are a great symbol of the tenacity of life on Earth.
