730 Times… Give or Take

Twenty-two years goes by quick. I remember when we brought our first child home from the hospital my wife said that routine and music were important. Each evening the pre-bedtime ritual was the same: brush teeth, read books, then sing songs. Without pre-thought or planning we settled on three songs – The Bear Went Over the Mountain, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Somewhere over the Rainbow.

Over the first two years we probably sang these songs 730 times. This lullaby dream time – with the hugs, the cuddling, the kisses; was the best 30 minutes of each day.

Somewhere around age two he started to have an opinion on which songs he wanted to hear. Like all of life, nothing stays the same forever.

Double Rainbow Tree House

I asked Casey, our in house photographer, if she had any memorable rainbow experiences. She came back quickly with, “not really”. She paused, thought a moment, then said, “I do see a lot of double rainbows from my apartment.”
I was surprised and questioned further. Casey went on, “I can think of maybe two times that there was only one rainbow, and at least four times there were double rainbows. I live on the top floor of an old Victorian house. It’s surrounded by tall oak trees. My friends and I call it the Tree House. I’ve even had a friend send a postcard addressed to my name at, “The Tree House” followed by my actual address.”

Casey painted a wonderful image in my mind, The Double Rainbow Treehouse – a dreamy space and place, a happy home. I asked if she had photos of these double rainbows, and being a photographer, she of course did (though by cell phone only). Pictures shown below.

A Great Price

My Dad came to my desk. He saw these rainbow pendants. He asked a couple of questions and was surprised by the price. He challenged me, saying, “This can’t possibly be right.” I insisted they were correct. I even double checked. Dad asked if the price included the chain. I told him it did. “Wow!” he said.

The gems are sapphires so they are bright. They are hard gems, second hardest to diamond, so they are durable. They are set in 14K white gold by a technique called channel-setting, so they are safe. I would expect they will remain tight for at least a hundred years, probably two hundred or more.

A Love of Color

Michael, the designer, visits the gem fields and cutting shops in Southeast Asia several times a year. He’s always on the lookout for these tight rainbow progressions. Michael collects them, then he mounts up a fresh collection of pieces.
