Cross opened in 1908 in Portland, Maine. That was 117 years ago. I’ve run the store for 50 years. In my 50 years, we’ve never had a star ruby, and I’m certain that in the previous 67 years, we never had a star ruby. Star rubies are rare—exceedingly rare. This gem has six legs from three reflective bars that cross in the middle. We purchased the star ruby from a gem source based in Burma, and the ruby itself originated from Burma. The most exquisite star rubies have a strong star. This is a very good star. What is awesome about this gem is that the star is centered and moves well across the surface as you, the ring, or the light source moves. All six legs are visible and move appropriately in tandem. In your lifetime, the odds are good you’ll never see a star ruby as fine as this. For maximum viewing, remember that no star ruby or sapphire ever shows on a cloudy day or under fluorescent light. The star can be seen with a single incandescent light. A pen light or smartphone flashlight will show your star really well, and a sunny day, any time of year, shows your star at its best.
This is a rare gem. It weighs 5.13 carats and measures 9.4×7.6mm. The ruby is surrounded by 16 natural earth-mined diamonds. Slightly larger diamonds are set in the north, south, east, and west positions. This handmade ring is all platinum. Its starting size is 7, it can be made larger or smaller. Sizing and shipping are free to any destination in the United States.
This is an exceedingly rare gem and ring. You will be known among your friends for having this star ruby. Be sure you master the flashlight on your smartphone or are ready to show it off on sunny days. We are including a special flashlight that will show this star at its very best whenever you wish.

This is a photograph I took at our back door at 9:24 AM in downtown Portland under 90% sunshine. There was a fine haze up high. It showed the ring design well and the star ruby nicely. A star rolls across the surface as you move, as the ring moves, or as the light source moves. The stars real movement across the surface of its gem is part of the fascination for a star ruby.
Rare Star Ruby
This is a 10-second video to show the star—to show how it rolls across the surface. We used a penlight to capture the star. We include a penlight with your purchase. We also guarantee you will not see the star on a cloudy day or under fluorescent lights. The penlight is best. If you’re showing this ring to a friend, keep the penlight in your purse.
Quality of star rubies: yes, there are some that are better—actually exquisite. They cost a lot more. This star ruby is very nice and is an excellent value. A sunny day allows you to see and show the star very well.
Are we likely to ever have another star ruby? Never at this price. It’s really a very good value.
