Paul Revere was famous in Boston for his work in silverware. He and his shops did bowls, pitchers, spoons, forks, and knives. What most people are unaware is that he made jewelry, too. Paul made his and his wife’s wedding rings. He would have made an engagement ring, but it would take 150 years for DeBeers to do the marketing in America for the engagement ring to catch on.
In 1776, Paul was also too early to know about a discovery of fine Maine tourmaline in the Maine territory of Massachusetts, which would occur in 1820 after Maine became an independent state. If Paul had known about this upcoming gem discovery, he would have made a ring similar to this. Paul died in 1818, two years before tourmaline was discovered in Maine.
Why did we name this Ring Revere? Partly because there is a ring called The Boston Ring which is essentially like this design. We make the Revere ring in our Portland, Maine shop, and we make it better than the Boston ring. It’s solid, practical, sits low to the finger, and is designed to last for decades. This ring with a green Maine tourmaline would have been a Massachusetts classic if Massachusetts hadn’t let go of Maine. So, we are suggesting today that someone from Massachusetts seriously consider adopting this ring.
