This morning I am sitting at an inn on the coast of Maine having breakfast. On the other side of the railing are lush flowers. The flowers are buzzing with bees. The bees know why they are there. They know their purpose, their mission.
These are baby bees, just weeks old. I cut the small round potato in half. It’s warm. It tastes good. A baby bee has collected its limit of pollen. The baby bee flies off over a field of grass, a farmer’s field, into the deep green woods.
My fork cuts the asparagus tips. Their green tastes good in their Hollandaise sauce. The forest is green, the trees and bushes are green, all the plants are green. I have a sip of coffee and watch the sparkling light on the ocean as the bee returns to its hive somewhere in the forest.

The center gem of this ring was found in Maine’s western mountains, just 25 miles north of Portland. The gem is a spring-green 2.97-carat cushion-cut tourmaline called SparHawk. It has a checkerboard-top cut, which means it’s a beautiful, glittery gem. On the sides of the ring is a woven lattice of gold, not quite a honeycomb, but it looks like a honeycomb of 10 high-white diamonds.
