I have an oak tree. It’s the second truly serious oak in my life. The first tree had a big bell on a bar between two massive branches. The bell had a 15-foot rope which allowed me to ring it anytime. The second oak tree is current. It also has two massive trunks. It sits on a sloping hill outside my house. I spent 23 years building a 250-foot stone wall with a terrace and stairs. The terrace has a big round inlaid slate table and sits centered under the tree canopy. The stone stairs lead down from the upper yard to the terrace, a walkway extends out from the terrace and then curls around and down to the lower yard. In this second tree I have a large wrought-iron candelabra. While I have a couple of dozen smaller oak trees on the property…these other trees are indistinguishable enough that I have to look twice to see if they are oak or maple. The big oak is a 100-year-old tree. There is no question about this tree’s identity. The oak terrace is 40 feet above the ocean, it’s a nice place to be human and have breakfast. The oak tree is a nice place for a squirrel to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner – and for a snack, one of the million acorns it produces every year.
I can’t think of a happier place for a squirrel to live than in an oak tree. Breakfast, lunch, supper, and snacks anytime he wants. Home in a sturdy oak has got to be the best. Leafy green shade in summer, sitting on a branch overlooking the yard and ocean, pink sun setting in the west. The squirrel with a plump acorn, furry tail twitching…life couldn’t be finer.
Pink Maine tourmaline from the 1972 discovery on Plumbago Mountain. This is a big pink Maine tourmaline, a monster by today’s standards, at 4.91 carats. It’s a true rarity, a half century after the big discovery in 1972. The color is pure. The cutting is exquisite. The clarity is superb. There is only one gem that meets these qualifications. The ring, 3 feet away, looks like a patterned design. Up close, its two dozen oak leaves layered on top of one another become obvious. Will there ever be another ring like this? No! The jeweler who made this has retired. There is only one in the world. Just one, with a big pink Maine tourmaline.
First, it has a big, rare pink Maine tourmaline, an awesome gem. Second, it’s a one-of-a-kind oak leaf pattern design. Third, it was made for 1 in 1,000 women. It’s a big ring, it fills the finger. It will be seen. It will be noticed. It’s a style created especially for you.

Maine Tourmaline, A Maine Story
An American Gem
First discovered in 1820 and in subsequent finds over the years, these early discoveries put Maine on the world map as a source for high-quality tourmaline gems. A major discovery in 1972 on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine established Maine as a significant world source of fine tourmaline gemstones.
Cross recognized the historical significance of this find and began working closely with the miners of these magnificent gems. The close partnership continues today with the ongoing discoveries in Maine’s western mountains.
100% Natural
We go to Maine’s gem mines. We know the miners. We know the gem cutters. We guarantee our tourmaline to be from Maine and is 100% natural. Cross maintains the largest collection of fine Maine tourmaline jewelry in the world.
Window of Opportunity
Fifty years have passed since the major 1972 tourmaline find in Newry, Maine where they found 3.5 million carats of tourmaline crystals. Over the years we bought more than we sold knowing that gem finds don’t last forever. There are now colors, sizes, and shapes that are extremely rare and, in some cases, no longer available. If you see something you love it’s best to act quickly. There’s no guarantee another gem like this one exists.
Case in point: In 2007 there was a find of tourmaline in Newry, Maine called Eureka Blue. People loved the color. The gems sold quickly, but the find was small and the mining only lasted a few seasons. Within three years of the discovery, all the large Eureka gems had sold. We still get calls from people who are now ready to buy. What they want, however, simply no longer exists from that find in 2007.
Gem finds are rare, especially in North America. Maine tourmaline is a piece of Maine and American history, it’s a connection to a place we all love, an exquisite creation of nature. Today, there is a rare opportunity to own a bit of Maine/American pride and heritage, and history in choosing a piece of Maine tourmaline jewelry.
