Super Strong Gold Ball Earrings
We were impressed with the new gold ball earrings. We had never felt the weight of anything like them. Hold one in your hand; it’s heavy, you can feel its weight. Most gold ball earrings are as light as a feather, so light, I imagine they could float in a glass of water, so light, they are tissue-thin.
We introduced these new super-weight gold ball earrings several years ago. Early on, Karen said we had a phenomenon occurring in showcase 15. I asked what it was. Karen told me we had a series of super-weight gold ball earrings that were flying out of the store.

I asked how we were advertising them. She said, “We’re not. That is what is so amazing.” She told me women ask to see them, we take them out, we tell them to close their eyes, and we drop one in the palm of their hand. The response is always the same. Every woman says, “huh,” and her eyes flash open. They just aren’t expecting them to be so heavy. “Here’s the strangest thing, we almost always sell one big pair and one or two smaller pairs: big for mom, smaller for daughters,” Karen added.
I asked Karen to bring them to me to see. Karen said, “I knew you’d ask. I’ve got them right here. Close your eyes,” she said, “and hold out your hand.”
“You’re kidding,” I said.
She said, “Just do it.” I held out my right hand, and she dropped the earring into my hand.
I said, “Huh.” I had never felt anything like it. It felt solid, heavy, weighty. I said, “Is it solid? It’s so heavy.”
She said, “It almost feels it. I was curious, too, and I did some high school math to calculate the density of 14K gold, diameter x 3.14. They’re quite solid, and my math shows there has to be an open core inside.”
“Wow!” I said. No one ever analyzed anything with this level of scrutiny. “You’re sure they’re not solid?” I asked.
Karen said, “Yup. The math is solid. The earrings are dense. We call them semi-solid because they have a hollow core. Because they are so dense, they are a lifetime pair of earrings. Most gold ball earrings have walls that are so thin they can dent from just talking on the phone. These new super strong gold ball earrings are virtually indestructible. That’s why moms buy a pair for themselves and pairs for their daughters.”
Are They Too Heavy?
I was concerned about the weight. I asked Karen if she thought they would be too heavy to wear comfortably. She said, “Not at all. Each super heavy-weight earring in the 6mm size weighs 3.19 carats. You see the turquoise earrings I’m wearing, they each weigh 37 carats, and they are all-day-comfortable, easy to wear.” Karen said, “I think the designer/maker of our super strong earrings chose the middle-Earth open-core approach for added comfort and to prevent drooping.”
I Wanted to Know More
Several years later, in preparation for an email, I was still surprised by how much heavier our earrings felt compared to ordinary gold ball earrings. But I wanted to know more. I asked our shop to cut a pair in half. We chose the 6mm size, sawed, and sliced right down the middle. Clearly, there was a middle-Earth opening, a negative space inside, just as the math said there would be. The walls were thick, however. I call it “thick like the Great Wall of China.” Cutting in half confirmed their semi-solid status.
Another member of the staff said we’ve got to do a comparative video showing the difference between the traditional gold ball earring and these new super strong gold ball earrings. I said, “Sure, let’s do it.”
