Sweetgrass

SparHawk Maine Tourmaline Ring

In the deep history of Maine, the ancients were here 5,000 years before Europeans arrived. I spent a week working on an archeological dig in Gouldsboro, Maine with the Abbey Museum. We were excavating the contact period between Native Americans and the Europeans’ first arrival.

Among the several items found were colored glass trade beads, made in Europe, that were traded with the natives for furs and other things. The presence of European beads tells the story of the English, French, or Dutch standing on these shores with their ancient ships anchored 100 yards off shore. Here, two feet down, was evidence, a time machine of sorts, of conversations, camp-life, and commerce taking place in spite of language barriers.

A ripple of excitement went through our archeological dig community of twelve as we gathered round to see these artifacts of the past come to light after 500 years, revealing moments of first contact.

Contemporary section of sweetgrass woven by Native Americans

Back at the Abbey Museum, I bought a traditional woven 2-strand braid of sweetgrass. I brought it back to Cross. The following Monday we began work on a new ring called “Sweetgrass – Maine Tourmaline”.

SparHawk Maine Tourmaline

The tourmaline used in this ring was first discovered in 2009 at a gemological dig in Poland, Maine, 28 miles north of our Portland, Maine store. The color found is called SparHawk mint-green-teal, a blue-green color. The site is at the top of a hill with the Little Androscoggin River wrapping around the base. What makes this site important is the quality of gems, the quality of color, and the consistency of gem clarity found there.

The tourmaline discoveries have continued, making this the most important gem tourmaline find in the world today. This is a serious ring with an important story to tell. In Maine’s ancient gem past, tourmaline formed 250 million years ago. Discovered only recently in Maine’s western mountains, we have combined tourmaline with the traditional Sweetgrass pattern of Native Americans to create a doubly powerful symbol of the State of Maine.
