Gloria put it on the same way every morning, clasp at the back, two fingers to straighten it against her collarbone. No mirror. She’d been doing it since 1991; the year she closed her first commercial property in Midtown and spent the commission on something she’d never have to return.

Her grandmother had told her once that gold you could feel meant you were never starting from nothing. She loved that. She loved the weight, the presence of real gold. It was all hers.

The necklace became her staple. Her go-to.

She wore it to every closing. She wore it to the deals that fell apart, and the ones that shouldn’t have gone through but did. She wore it the morning the Burke contract nearly collapsed over four inches of disputed sidewalk. She stepped into the hallway, made three calls, and came back with a city surveyor on hold before anyone had time to panic.

She wore it the afternoon a fund manager slid a last-minute counter across the table. His smile expected warmth in return. She thanked him for his time, closed her folder, and began to stand. He signed the original terms before she reached the door.

The men in those rooms wore their watches to be noticed. Gloria wore the necklace to remind herself that she’d already done it once. Which meant she could do it again.
