You can have it all. This is the gathering, the sweep, the curl, the crest, and the moment the wave speaks. It’s all here in this perfect wave of brilliant blue gems or frothy white diamonds. It’s your endless Maine summer to be with you always.
A Wave Jumping Three-year-old
“Those are big waves!” My son’s excitement sweeps across his face as he looks out at the gentle breakers on our first summer trip to the beach. The waves aren’t even halfway up to my knee, but to a three-year-old they’re huge.
He runs into the cool ocean water then back out, trying to outrace the incoming sea. He wants to go out further. I pick him up. We wade out to where the waves roll and break. I dip and dunk, splash his legs against the surge, then swing him along in tandem with the white water. We call it “surfing”.
He’d stay all day, eventually nap time calls. Five minutes into our drive home he’s asleep.
Summer Storm Waves
Draws Crowds to the Shore
Storm out to sea, hazy light, froth and foam, surging seas, pounding surf. The energy of the ocean has a gravity all its own pulling the curious and adventurous to the rocky cliffs to watch.
It’s August, a nice day, storm out to sea, no rain jacket needed. There’s a crowd. Photographers line up with tripods and telephoto lenses. Little kids stay close to parents, they can feel the power and danger. Bigger kids want to get close, to feel the raw energy.
A two-masted schooner passes in front of Ram Island Light at the entrance to Portland Harbor. Waves strike the side of the tower. It’s a great image for the photographers on the cliff.
I think about what it must feel like to be out on the sailboat. Sweeping sea swells, the trough then crest, a slow motion roller coaster. Waves halfway up the light house, wind whipping salt spray, covering lips, coating sunglasses. There’s a damp stickiness to salt spray. Moving with the sea, with the wind, the boat and captain are in harmony with natures force.
Sunset Schooner Trip Out of Portland Harbor
Whenever someone from out of town visits it’s often a chance to do fun tourist things you’d never otherwise get around to trying. My wife’s brother was up from New York City so we decided to take him on a sunset cruise of Portland harbor aboard the Wendameen schooner with Portland Schooner Company.
While the sunset was just a sliver of muted color beneath a ceiling of gray clouds, it was a fun evening. I even got to help hoist the sails up.
I couldn’t resist bringing some jewelry along to photograph. My wife had no complaints.
