Why We Love This Piece

This cross is petite. It’s super simple. It’s only 3/4” high, pure white sterling silver with a dot of 24K pure gold at its center. The stone – the gold – is a symbol of resurrection. The cross is small enough to be barely noticeable, it’s powerful enough to be life changing. Front and back are identical, which means you can wear it either way.

Catholic and Protestant Bibles

Her King James Bible

I’m a protestant. I’m a member of the Congregational Church. I grew up in the church. My people, as far back as anyone could remember, have been Congregationalists. And yet, almost all of my girlfriends growing up and a wife were Catholic.

In later years, I met a Congregational woman at my church. She had a round face, and blond hair pulled back. She was quiet with the most sincere eyes I’ve ever seen. She spoke softly and carried a navy-blue bible with a blue satin ribbon page marker. On the cover and on the spine, the words “Holy Bible” were stamped in gold letters. Also, on the spine in gold was “King James Version”, and at the bottom, it said “Words of Christ” in red.

She carried her Bible in her right hand…quietly. The Bible was almost invisible…it was simply there with her every Sunday. From time to time, we talked about ordinary things.

When we would part, she would say things like, “Christ be with you or have a lovely Easter,” or something that felt like a blessing. It always felt sincere.

The Cross Family Bible, first entry June 10, 1773

The Cross Family Bible

I am the holder of the Cross-family Bible. It’s at least 250 years old. It records births and marriages for over 200 years. Marriages and births have been recorded in the blank pages in the front of the Bible. A William Cross married Abby, on June 10, 1773.

The original holders of the Bible had no idea who would inherit the Bible. With multiple children in each generation, somehow, ten generations later, it seems remarkable that I have been entrusted with this family treasure.

The Resurrection Cross

There are 10,000 variations of the Christian cross, all very beautiful. We have added to this simple cross a pure gold circle that represents the stone at the tomb, rolled back to mark mankind’s redemption by Jesus’ sacrifice and resurrection.

My grandfather, Linwood Cross, was often heard to quote John 3:16. I heard him hundreds of times. Truth, I never really paid serious attention until we made the Resurrection Cross, then its importance became so clear.

John 3:16: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

Why is John 3:16 the most important verse in the Bible?

For Christians, John 3:16 has become perhaps the most important passage in the Bible. The point is that Christ is salvation, and those who believe in Christ are saved. That is the central message for all Christians.
