Will and I wanted to thank you for spending such a great deal of time with us while we chose a style of engagement ring. Before coming to Maine, we read several Downeast magazines and when we saw the ad for the victory ring, we instantly knew we had to make a pit stop in Portland before heading to Camden.
Though Will and I have browsed around at other stores here in New York for rings I have to admit I was astounded by Cross’ magnificent quality and cut of diamonds. The triple victory was so beautiful and ornate. I also like the Lady Captain’s ring. However, I’ve left the decision up to Will to choose the ring. And speaking of rings, I can’t wait to receive my Blue Gray Eyes ring that we ordered.

Cross Quality Diamond Setting

How well a diamond is set and secured is often overlooked by engagement ring shoppers. The quality of setting is not obvious at first glance, and can really only be seen under a microscope.
The quality of the diamond setting plays an essential role in the safety, security, and enjoyment of a ring for decades. How well a diamond is set can mean the difference between a ring that spends a month a year in a repair shop to tighten/re-secure, a ring that keeps snagging on fabrics, or even a lost gem, versus a ring that can be worn and enjoyed for years with minimal upkeep.
All center diamonds at Cross are set by one of Cross’s own jewelers. The Cross standard for diamond setting has remained the same for over 100 years. The reason is simple: there is just one right way to set a diamond securely in a prong-set ring.
A prong should have an angle cut into it which provides a secure seat on which the diamond evenly rests.
The prong should be drawn securely down over the top edge of the diamond to rest flat and secure over the surface of the gem.
The heel of the prong should be thick enough to provide structural strength for years of wear.
The prong should have a smooth, rounding polished surface.
All the above factors are important because when a diamond is set properly it looks its best and is as safe as it can possibly be.
We do recommend a professional clean and check for all jewelry at least once per year. Clean and check is always free at Cross and takes just a few minutes.
What to Avoid
in Poorly-Set Jewelry
We see poorly set gems every day from jewelry that is brought in for cleaning or repair. Shown below are common examples of improperly set diamonds.

The Cross Craftsmanship Difference
Our diamond setters are instructed to take the full measure of time to ensure each job is properly completed. When setting a diamond they work with a 20x power microscope because working under this level of magnification means the finished ring is the most beautiful and secure it can possible be.
