A whisper moon is that thin slip of silver in the twilight sky that leads to what is known in June as the Strawberry Moon…the first full moon of June when wild strawberries plump-out and pink-up to sweet red.

When we set our Whisper Moon necklace with a pink Maine tourmaline, we claim this early moon as our own Maine moon, knowing the whisper promises to become a full strawberry moon in less than two weeks.

Did you ever go wild strawberry picking? It’s a project for kids who eat them as they go and grandmothers who may be patient and restrained enough to collect a small bowl of berries and make strawberry muffins or save some to sprinkle strawberries on morning cereal, or, if she is gifted in the ancient arts of farming, she may make her own strawberry ice cream.

To the Strawberry Moon

The strawberry full moon in June 2020 occurred on June 5th. I went out to Ocean Point Hill at 9:26PM. There was field grass, a sea breeze, grass tossing in the wind, and a full moon sailing across a silver sea. The phases of the moon are countable and are reason enough to visit the night when the moon is full. The phases of the moon are an invitation to step out onto the porch, even if only for a minute or two, to see how the moon and sea are doing on any particular evening.

Whisper Moon…consider that it is possible that a full round sphere is up there in the night sky, while all you can see is a lazy backwards “C” with sharp pointy ends. It seems amazing, and every night that backwards “C” grows until it becomes a full moon. Because I don’t fully understand the moon and its phases, I go back hundreds of times to watch the moon become full. In the presence of the moon, I am a child.

Pink Maine Tourmaline

For nearly fifty years, Maine has been known for the outstanding clarity of our pink tourmaline. Maine has become world famous for the combination of beautiful color, outstanding clarity, and magnificent rare sizes in pink tourmaline.

Early on, we recognized this unique combination, and started collecting these amazing native gems. Since 1972, there have been no significant finds of pink in Maine, and these gems become rarer each day.

We wish we could see into the future, but supplies of pink are, at this time, limited and uncertain. If you desire a pink tourmaline from Maine, a decision sooner rather than later would prove wise.

Tourmaline: A Maine Story, An American Gem

First discovered in 1820, subsequent finds over the years put Maine on the world map as a source for high quality tourmaline gems. A major discovery in 1972 on Plumbago Mountain in Newry, Maine cemented Maine as a significant world source of fine tourmaline gemstones.

Cross recognized the historic significance of this find and began working closely with the miners of these magnificent gems. The close partnership continues today with the ongoing discoveries in Maine’s western mountains.

If you fell in love with a painting from an artist and wanted to buy two, you could purchase prints and they would be identical. If you wanted two originals, the artist may accommodate your request, but there would be differences – brush-stroke, gesture, placement, or slight color variations.

When it comes to natural colored gemstones, we are limited by what nature has provided. Some colored gemstones, such as blue topaz and citrine, there is sufficient supply and you can get close to the concept of “prints” that you find in the art world.

When it comes to Maine tourmaline there are no “prints”. There is a limited supply of gems and each gemstone is a singular work of nature. Depending on a Maine tourmaline’s size, shape or color, there may not be another one like it.
