One side of my family was 100% pure Scottish. I had a red-headed grandmother who was dangerous…even as a kid, I knew she was dangerous. She lived at the ocean, down in the sand dunes, in a cottage built by my grandfather. She was more adventuresome than any kid I knew. She was prepared to go hiking on the cliffs above the beach. She explored things even kids didn’t dare do. As a kid, you learn a lot from a grandmother like that. I never remember her mentioning Will-O’-Wisps. I am sure she knew, though. She knew a lot.

In the winter, my grandmother went inland to her winter home. She had ivy with runners 50 feet long. The ivy traveled with her summer and winter. Her people had brought it with them to America. I have a sprig of that ivy growing in my kitchen. It’s been there for 50 years. -R.H.P.
