Blue sapphire. Blue is America’s favorite color, sapphire is America’s favorite colored gem. Blue is angelic – together with a sterling silver or yellow gold wing, it’s magic.

I was 38, it was 1987, I had hiked up Plumbago Mountain – site of America’s greatest gem find. Every few years I make a pilgrimage to the western mountains and this legendary mountain. It was fall, the leaves were red and yellow, orange and brown. Blue sky, full sun, dry air and a good breeze out of the west. Every once in a while the west wind would catch the leaves on the trees in the valley below and blow them up and off the trees, sending the leaves soaring high into the sky. I’d never seen this phenomena, it was beautiful. Every time I see this piece I think of that day on the mountain. I realize the Wind Beneath My Wings story is spiritual, while my trip to the mountain and the west wind is just a story of a beautiful day. But then again, can’t the literal journey carry us into the spiritual realm? It felt like it that day.
