Jeff Didn’t Know It At the Time
His Purchase of the Land
and This Lost Gem Mine Would Make World History
Jeff was in the foundation business. He knew digging, blasting, and moving rock. He had diggers and big trucks. He was looking to buy land for house lots. He came across a plot of land up country that had had an ancient tourmaline mine. The price was right so he bought it. Little did he know at the time of his purchasing it would make world gem history. Before he started with house lots he thought he would do some weekend exploring. Three years in he discovered a significant gem tourmaline pocket. If that was all that he had found it would have made Maine gem history and 100 years later his find would become part of Maine’s history, legend, and lore.
Cross Jewelers Introduces SparHawk Mint Green Teal
Maine Tourmaline To The World
What impressed the Portland jeweler was that the tourmaline was so beautiful. These tourmaline gems just naturally glitter and glow.
Cross recognized that no gem find lasts forever, and early on bought the majority of Jeff’s SparHawk tourmaline production cut by Sean Sweeny. Cross designed and made hundreds of pieces of jewelry from the early 21st century finds of the SparHawk discovery.
Our caution for anyone considering a piece of SparHawk Mint-Green-Teal tourmaline jewelry is don’t wait. Fine gems are rare, rarer than most people realize. When a new discovery occurs gems are available at prices that decades later will seem unbelievably low. Regret can be recast as wise choices early on with decades of enjoyment for the exotic and rare.

The World’s Most Beautiful Tourmaline
SparHawk Mint-Green-Teal
Jeff went on to open dozens of gem pockets of highly consistent mint green teal tourmaline. Jeff hired Sean Sweeney of Bar Harbor, one of the best precision gem cutters in the world, to cut most of his gems.
Jeff would work for weeks or months digging, blasting, and moving rock. When he got close to a new discovery he would invite four, five, up to a dozen people to the opening and reveal in real time what nature had created. Sean cut hundreds of gems, most were documented and set by a Portland Maine jeweler.
