Summer Mornings at the Shore

I go to the shore summer mornings to be with the ocean and to greet the sun. I have come to welcome the new day and to be at one with the sea. I come with camera, a cup of tea and time. I’m ready for anything. Our shore is rocky with cliffs that tower. Above the sea, nautical charts show the ocean plunges rapidly here and the water is deep immediately off shore. Whales, dolphins, seals, and sharks could be just below the surface of the sea this morning. I have seen seals on our shore, I’ve seen seals frolicking in the waves. I’ve never seen a whale off our shore. I’ve been watching for 50 years, I know they are here, they have to be…our water is deep enough. I see the whale watch boats go out every day. The whales are out there by the hundreds.

Back to sunrise. The sun breaks the horizon at 5:18 this morning. I’m waiting now on the rising tide. I’m waiting as the sky goes from red to pink and pink orange. Then there is the flash of orange gold. Light flooding across 1000’s of miles of sea. Light skipping across the tops of waves. Light landing on boats at anchor. Light silhouetting islands and morning gulls. I sip my tea and watch the sun create sparkle on the tops of incoming waves.
