Memories of Summer
There is always one morning when you realize that summer is ending. Along the Maine coast, you can almost feel it before you see it. The nights grow a little cooler, the sun rises a little later, and there is a crispness hiding beneath the familiar smell of salt air. Even the gulls seem less hurried. Getting up early before anyone else is awake, and walking down to the water is wonderfully quiet. The sand is cool beneath your feet, and the ocean is still dark, almost blue-gray. Out on the horizon, though, the first hint of sunlight is beginning to appear. At first, it is just a thin line of pale yellow. Then comes the gold.
Slowly, the rising sun begins to spill its color across the Atlantic. Amber, honey, yellow and deep warm gold mingle together, changing every few moments as the sun climbs higher. A pathway of light stretches across the water, sparkling toward shore. For those few minutes, everything seems touched by gold.
Soon the cottage will be closed up. Beach towels will be washed and folded, boats pulled from the water, and all those little things that accumulate during a Maine summer will be packed away. Before long, the warm mornings and long afternoons by the ocean will become memories. But standing there watching that sunrise, summer doesn’t feel quite ready to leave. Its warmth is still there in the golden light dancing across the Atlantic.
If I slow down I’m imagining another 30 years. A coffee cup in my left hand, holding a stick in my right. Holding the stick for balance and yes, I’m there on the beach on a driftwood log watching the sunrise. Yellow-gold, twinkle on wave tops, a straight line up into the sky. Now that I’ve got another 30 years, I can sit and watch. Another sip of coffee, one sun…two suns. Golden sparkles…
Why I Love this gem.
Each citrine has its own mixture of those wonderful colors from sunrise on the water. Some are warm honey gold, others flash yellow and amber, and some deepen almost to the rich orange of the sun as it first appears above the horizon. Set in gold, they seem to hold onto the light. Atlantic Sunrise Citrine does exactly that. It captures a little of the warmth, color and light of a Maine summer morning, something golden to carry with you long after summer has gone, until the next one comes along.
