A few years ago, I spent ten days in Thailand. I walked Gem City. I studied the hundreds of lotus flower ponds, I watched goldfish swim about, and saw locals on pastel motor scooters travelling around the city. We went to gem sites, places where they lifted banana trees and set them to one side, then mined the gravel for gems. I studied the big, hulking machinery. After the mining, they put the banana trees back, and ten years later, you’d never know that they had mined the land.

Gem mining in Thailand was not beautiful, but the gem sapphires cut from their blue crystals were. In Maine, we don’t do gem gravel mining. We do hard-rock mining. In Maine, we open voids in the rock filled with crystals. Our Maine gem mining is spectacular. In Thailand, we visited gem cutting shops. Some shops were primitive, some were modern.

Thailand was the center of the world for gem mining for many years. It still has state-of-the-art cutting shops. Several of our partners in Thailand do gem cutting. This is a pair of earrings we made from Thai sapphires. The sapphires are light, bright, and airy. We have surrounded these two oval sapphires with a halo of thirty-two diamonds. These earrings are suspended by lever-backs, so they move when you move. The look is dazzling.
