It was a chilly autumn afternoon in Cambridge, Massachusetts, when Emma first wandered into the cozy bookstore nestled on a quiet corner just off Harvard Square. She had been looking for a quiet place to escape the bustle of campus life, to lose herself in the pages of a good book. The bookstore’s warm glow and the smell of coffee drew her in like a magnet.
As she browsed the shelves, her fingers lingering on the spines of novels she might never have time to read, she heard a soft voice beside her.
“Good choice,” the voice said. Emma turned and saw a tall, slightly awkward young man with tousled dark hair and a sweater that looked a bit too large for him. He was pointing at the book she had just picked up, East of Eden by Steinbeck.
She smiled. “You’ve read it?”
“A few times,” he replied, his eyes lighting up. “Steinbeck doesn’t shy away from the messiness of life.”
“I’ve always wanted to read this one,” Emma admitted, “but I keep putting it off.”
“You won’t regret it,” he assured her, and just like that, a conversation sparked. They spent the next hour talking about books, favorite authors, and shared stories about the quirks of Cambridge life. His name was Adam, and he was a philosophy major, while Emma was studying literature. It was an effortless connection, they talked as if they’d known each other for years, but neither asked for the other’s number. It felt like enough to leave the moment as it was.
* * * *
Ten years later, on another brisk autumn afternoon, Emma found herself wandering into that very same bookstore. Life had taken her in directions she hadn’t expected—jobs, travels, and a string of cities that never quite felt like home. Cambridge had always held a special place in her heart, though, and something about this day had pulled her back to the square, back to the warmth of that familiar bookstore.
As she walked through the aisles, running her fingers along the familiar spines, she spotted a book she hadn’t seen in years—East of Eden. A soft laugh escaped her. She picked it up, and as she did, she heard a voice beside her—this time, deeper, more confident.
“You finally decided to read it?”
Emma’s heart skipped a beat. She turned to see Adam standing there, looking as though not much had changed in a decade except the hints of wisdom in his eyes. His hair was still tousled, his smile just as warm, but there was a presence to him now that hadn’t been there before.
“You again,” Emma said with a grin, her heart racing in a way that felt like fate.
They spent the afternoon catching up, seated at a small table in the bookstore’s café. Adam told her about his years as a professor, his travels, and the times he’d thought of her—wondering what had become of the girl he’d met over a Steinbeck novel so long ago. Emma shared her own stories, about her writing, her adventures, and the nagging feeling that she had left something unfinished in Cambridge.
As the sun began to set, casting long shadows over the square, Adam looked at her and smiled. “I always wondered if we’d meet again.”
Emma laughed softly. “It seems the universe had a plan all along.”
A year later, under the very same bookstore’s cozy glow, surrounded by shelves of stories that had brought them together, Adam and Emma said their vows. Their journey had begun with a book, a chance encounter between two college students on a quiet Cambridge afternoon. Now, it had come full circle, and their love story was written into the pages of their lives, bound by the years in between and the magic of finding each other again.
Why We Love This Ring
A ring of substance and fundamental simplicity. The diamond is poised at medium height within a hand-wired setting. The band is solid, slightly wider than typical, gentle half-round and tapering slightly to the back.

How well a diamond is set and secured is often overlooked by engagement ring shoppers. The quality of setting is not obvious at first glance, and can really only be seen under a microscope.
The quality of the diamond setting plays an essential role in the safety, security, and enjoyment of a ring for decades. How well a diamond is set can mean the difference between a ring that spends a month a year in a repair shop to tighten/re-secure, a ring that keeps snagging on fabrics, or even a lost gem, versus a ring that can be worn and enjoyed for years with minimal upkeep.
All center diamonds at Cross are set by one of Cross’s own jewelers. The Cross standard for diamond setting has remained the same for over 100 years. The reason is simple: there is just one right way to set a diamond securely in a prong-set ring.
A prong should have an angle cut into it which provides a secure seat on which the diamond evenly rests.
The prong should be drawn securely down over the top edge of the diamond to rest flat and secure over the surface of the gem.
The heel of the prong should be thick enough to provide structural strength for years of wear.
The prong should have a smooth, rounding polished surface.
All the above factors are important because when a diamond is set properly it looks its best and is as safe as it can possibly be.
We do recommend a professional clean and check for all jewelry at least once per year. Clean and check is always free at Cross and takes just a few minutes.
What to Avoid
in Poorly-Set Jewelry
We see poorly set gems every day from jewelry that is brought in for cleaning or repair. Shown below are common examples of improperly set diamonds.

The Cross Craftsmanship Difference
Our diamond setters are instructed to take the full measure of time to ensure each job is properly completed. When setting a diamond they work with a 20x power microscope because working under this level of magnification means the finished ring is the most beautiful and secure it can possible be.
