Catching The Wind Blue Sapphire & Diamond Necklace

When I was twenty, I spent three months traveling through Europe. I moved from city to city by train and bus, with a rough outline of where I’d be a few days later. One afternoon, I found myself on Inis Mór, the largest of Ireland’s Aran Islands.

The island felt shaped by the wind. Stone walls stretched across the landscape in every direction, dividing fields of green that rolled toward the Atlantic. The air smelled of salt, and the breeze never stopped moving.

I rented a bicycle and spent the day wandering. No map. Just the freedom to see where the road might lead. At one point, I stopped near an old stone wall where a man in rubber boots was making repairs. He was short and weathered, with neatly trimmed white hair and a face that looked as though it had spent a lifetime in the wind. He looked up, said hello, and before long, we were talking. He asked me if I would like to come to the house for a whiskey. I said yes.

His wife had passed away years earlier. His son had moved to the United States, a place he’d visited and loved. He told stories about growing up on the island and what life had been like there. We shared a bit of whiskey— a little rough for me, if I’m being honest- the conversation more than made up for it.

We talked for less than an hour. It was a small moment. An ordinary conversation between two strangers. Yet, all these years later, it remains one of my favorite memories from the entire trip. Sometimes the moments that stay with us longest are the ones we never planned at all. – SLP
