I had a girlfriend in high school. I adored her. She liked nice things. She wore very nice perfume. For Valentine’s Day one year I wanted to get her something really nice. I was thinking of a small bottle of perfume, something precious, something rare. I went to the big department store in our city and visited their perfume counter.

I explained what I was looking for…something nice in a small bottle of perfume. All they could talk about was jug perfume, big quantities, and what a great value their quart and gallon-size containers represented. The lady simply couldn’t understand that I wanted precious and rare, not big at a low price.

For Valentine’s Day that year, my girlfriend got a box of chocolates. They were nice. She shared.
