42-foot Hinkley anchored at Pulpit Rock. 10pm. Slipped the row boat off the stern. Helped Jennifer slide in. Full Moon breaking the horizon, still wind, gentle seas, bottle of Chianti, French bread, goat cheese and a round end knife. Rowing to shore, green phosphorescent swirls. Sound of oars, sound of oar locks clicking, waves lapping at the bow, stars above, Harbor Lights a mile away in the warm night air.
No, we didn’t row toward the harbor, we rowed to the cliffs. The tide was running high, the moon that night was a full hourglass on the water. We climbed the cliff and sat out on a rock bridge that jutted out into the sea. The top of the bridge was grassy. Waves on the shore 20 feet below.
Jennifer should have been impressed with the boat: its pedigree, impeccable, condition like new, gently sailed, loved for a dozen years. When we caught up with one another three years later, she mentioned that night, nothing about the boat, everything about the rock bridge and the wine and the French bread. I have to agree, the moonlight was awesome that night.
